Day 2 of Katowice 2016 came to an end and with it came the close of the gruelling round robin Group Stage of katowice 2016. The Group Stage format was elegantly planned with 6 teams in each group and a round robin format. The first team from each group goes directly to the semi finals. The second and third place play a best of three match in the round of six and the winner proceeds to face off in the semi finals.
Group B was power packed with teams such as
- Virtus Pro
- Tempo Storm
Prior to the games, the strongest teams on paper were definitely Astralis , EnVyUs, Virtus Pro and Faze. However as the matches proceeded it was obvious that the dark horse came forth and in a very dominating way.
Astralis topped the group having won all their 5 games. They won with scorelines of 16-11, 16-6, 16-5, 16-5 and 16-12. The team looked really dominant with all players turning up. Xyp9x was his typical clutchmaster while Karrigan maneouvered his team wonderfully around Tempo Storm.
Tempo Storm were definitely the surprise package of the tournament. They came into this tournament after surprising many top NA teams. Coming into this tournament they were reeling off a loss at the Major Qualifiers. However they did manage to brush all that off and win their matches against Efrag, VP and EnVyUs. They also lost in overtime against Faze and 12-16 to Astralis. The team looked really strong in their matches and even in their losses the scorelines were very close.
The third team to qualify to the playoffs is Virtus Pro. The local Polish team definitely had a bad start to the group as they lost to Astralis and Tempo storm. Even their win over EnVyUs was too close for comfort. However with their win over Faze and Efrag they secured their place into the playoffs. Their bid was immensely helped by the fact that Tempo Storm managed to defeat EnVyUs.
The final three teams who were left out are Efrag, Faze and EnVyUs. EnVyUs were definitely not expected to be on this list. They are a top three team and their bowing out in the group stage definitely adds a lot of surprise for many. However they are undergoing a transition period in the fact that they have a new IGL, NBK. The team is extremely talented and it is hoped with this change they will be able to perform much better.
Faze’s performance was decent, but it was not enough to qualify for the playoff stage. The team itself played decently but there were no extraordinary plays such as the ones we saw during Cluj Napoca. Efrag, the final team was quite disappointing especially when we consider some of their previous iterations of LAN events. This event would be a good learning experience for Efrag and hopefully they will be able to play much better.
