Overwatch is a team game. It is a 6v6 game designed to be played off a combination of ultimates. However the Play of the Game feature / MVP system that work inside the game has worked towards something opposite.
The POTG system rewards players who get the kills instead of trying to focus on a more gameplay oriented efforts by the other champions. We might have a 4 man blizzard by Mei, but if Genji gets the kills; the Genji will get the POTG.
Blizzard officials have repeatedly acknowledged the flawed system in the Play of the Game. They have made minor tweaks to the way the system recognises POTG, however there have not been any major noticeable changes.
According to Geoff Goodman at Blizzcon 2016;
“There’s a plan to do what we’re calling Play of the Game 2.0,” he said. “It’s been on the books for a little while. It’s just a matter of prioritizing everything. We have a lot of really cool ideas. We want to do a lot with the camera work. We have ideas for cooperative Play of the Games. Because what we have right now, is Zarya could ult, and then Genji gets the credit. And that’s like, ‘Come on!’”
“So we want to highlight the combo play itself, to show both,” he added. “There’s some tricky things there, like how do we handle Play of the Game intros, and how do we decide who gets credit.”
Blizzard will be overhauling the POTG System. They will call it POTG 2.0 . The feature will highlight the combinations played out by the players. As such the performance of the team is more important than individual performances.
