It’s not secret that Team SoloMid has had a fairly poor performance in Overwatch, but the news of exiting the scene is a shocking one. After Blizzard announced they will be focusing more on competitive Overwatch and make it more enticing for teams, they have failed to do so which resulted in one of the biggest esports organisations exiting the scene. This is a huge blow, as not only is TSM a major organisation leaving the scene, but it is also a huge red flag for other organisations looking to join competitive Overwatch. Overall, it means that the Overwatch scene would lose possible investment, and likely that the money will be invested in other games, a huge blow to Blizzard. B1am mentions that TSM’s main reason for departing the scene is due to the poor management and organisation of the Overwatch League.
“It’s no secret at this point that ConnorJ and I have been working with TSM over the past few months to put together an OW roster. Recently we had just closed in our final six after having trialed dozens of extremely talented players, but unfortunately (due to circumstances outside of our control) the team isn’t going to come to fruition. After learning more information about the OWL ($$$), TSM decided that it’d be better for the organization to stay out of the competitive scene, at least for now. TSM and I have now mutually parted ways and I hope to be involved again in the scene very soon.”
Due to this reasoning, it is unlikely TSM will ever return to the Overwatch scene, unless Blizzard immediately fixes their competitive scene which discourages investment. The news follows as REUNITED too ceased operations in Overwatch in January this year.
According to the Sports Business Journal, investment in Overwatch is defintiley slowing down, mostly due to the high initial start up costs. The costs are mostly due to the buy in costs to enter the Overwatch League, where prices can range from 2.5 to 15 millions just to obtain a spot in the league.
